Saying 'Yes' before I felt ready

In February last year, my husband and I made a big move, 10,000 kms away from home, and settled in a foreign land. From the outside, it might have looked brave and decisive, but inside, it felt fragile and delicate. The move was sprinkled with transitional joy and nervous anticipation. We left behind familiar rhythms, easy conversations, and the quiet confidence that comes from knowing where you belong. Everything required more effort. From navigating new systems, new expectations, to new ways of being understood. Some days felt full and hopeful. Others felt unsteady, like we were learning to stand on ground that hadn’t quite settled yet.
But beneath all of this, there was a quieter yes - one I had first resolved to respond to a few years earlier. A call to serve God and His people more fully, even when the shape of that calling still felt unclear. This calling gained clarity in 2024 when I was invited into full-time mission with Catholic Christian Outreach (CCO) in Ottawa. The call came quickly and suddenly. In my heart I knew my response, yet there were moments I struggled with uncertainty, and doubt. I was constantly seeking reassurance and affirmation. Is this really what I am called to do? What if I'm not good enough for the job? What if I'm just out of place with the people there? Would I be able to handle the career shift? The questions didn’t come quietly. They followed me through the day, circling my thoughts, asking to be answered. And for a while, that was all I had - questions, self-doubt and hesitation.
Amidst all the mixed emotions, I kept searching for solid ground. A foundation to steady me and help me seal my yes.
Throughout my faith journey, Scripture has always been my favorite way of communicating with God. I fondly remember the first time I felt a sudden desire to read the entire New Testament at just 8 years old. Of course, I didn't fully understand what I was doing then, but looking back, it brings a smile to my face when I think of it as Jesus reaching out, inviting me into friendship. Since my first encounter with Christ, I have always returned to the Word in every season of life. Reading Scripture is, for me, like a warm hug from Jesus Himself.

And so, when I was overwhelmed with confusion and doubt about this new journey I was about to embark on, I turned to Jesus in Scripture, seeking the assurance my heart was longing for. And this is how He spoke to me.
I am about to do a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert. - Isaiah 43:19
This verse became my anchor. It grounded me when doubts crept back in, reminding me that Jesus was at work in this new chapter of my life. With a profound conviction, I said yes to the role with CCO, trusting that He would guide me.
Isaiah 43:19 became more than just words for me. It became a lens through which I could see my new life unfolding. “I am about to do a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert.” This verse reminded me that God is always at work, even when the path ahead seems uncertain or unfamiliar. The new thing isn’t always easy to see at first, but it’s there, quietly forming in the midst of change. And the promise of rivers in the desert felt like hope itself, something living, refreshing, and sustaining even in places I never imagined could flourish. Holding onto this verse, I could step forward with courage. Did I have all the answers? Absolutely not. But I knew God’s presence and guidance were real and faithful.
An anchor verse is more than just words on a page. It’s a piece of Scripture that holds you steady in life’s uncertainties, a promise to cling to when the ground beneath feels unsteady. It’s a reminder that even when everything around you feels new, unfamiliar, or overwhelming, God’s Word can be a firm place to stand.
I’ve created a space on my website to help you discover your own anchor verses. There, you’ll find a guide to help you choose a verse that speaks to your heart and your current season of life. It’s designed to be simple, practical, and personal because your anchor verse should be something that truly feels like your own. You’ll also find a few thoughtful items inspired by the idea of holding onto God’s promises, as gentle reminders of the hope and encouragement your anchor verse can bring.
Life will always bring seasons of uncertainty, change, and questions that feel too big to answer. But in those moments, we don’t have to face them alone. Your anchor verse can be a quiet companion, a steady reminder that God is with you, guiding your steps, and shaping new beginnings, even in the places you least expect.
You can explore the guide and resources here.
My hope and prayer for you is that, as you journey through your own seasons, you might find a verse that holds you close, reminds you of His promises, and gives you courage to say yes to the new things He is doing in your life.
